Fresh out of college, but already doing business I had no idea this is how my dream would turn out. I always wanted to be a teacher (but not public school), to travel and I loved to sew. Who knew that it was God’s plan for me all along? Here I am years later and I can see that it has all come true. Not the way I had envisioned it, but none the less all true. It was in my early 20′s that I made quilts with shapes of Africa, never imagining that I would go there one day. After many years of custom sewing I started teaching others in 1999. By 2004 I went on my first missionary trip to Kenya. Several years and trips later I had the honor of staying for a month to work with sewing classes in two Nairobi slums. Since then I have traveled to Papua New Guinea (near Australia) and presented sewing workshops there also. Now as I prepare to go to Haiti to work with children and do another sewing workshop, I am in awe that God had this planned for me. I love how my life is greater than my dream. What have you always wanted to do? If you take a look you may find that you are already on that path… If not, get started now!

Sewing/Sowing for life! February 12, 2010

Sewing and sowing is not a play on words. Its my life!  Sewing is my gift and skill from God! Sowing is how I use the gift and skill to invest in others. I want God to know that I appreciate Him trusting me to use it for His glory. As I begin this blog I want to remind myself  and others how precious and needed our gifts are to our families, communities and to the world. It only takes one person using their gifts for His Glory to change a life. That life multiplies and changes others and it keeps going and going and going. Yes! ” Pay it forward”.

In July 2009, I went on my 2nd mission trip to Papua New Guinea. The woman pictured with me was in the sewing class. I asked if I could  tryout her machine and she was happy to oblige. It was a Singer model with a hand crank to make it sew. I changed a knob on the machine and it startled the woman.  To my shock she didn’t know that she had reverse on her machine. There was only one question to ask. ” How long have you been sewing?” ” 27 years”.   Wow!! It’s still amazing that it took God sending me after 27 years to change a life. I don’t know what she will do with the reverse button now that she has the knowledge, but I’m sure it saves her time.

Don’t be surprised when God uses you to sow into a life on the other side of the world.
